One of the Nastiest MotherF@$king Bands You Will Ever See Live

An Interview with Jason Evans of Ingested

By: George Archibald

Jay-Evans-of-Ingested-webUK band Ingested has been churning out their brand of death/slam/deathcore metal since 2007. Ingested set out to be one of the nastiest bands on the scene. By including deep guttural vocals, blast beats and double bass drum patterns, and hardcore/sludge guitar riffs with bits of slam mixed, they have created a cornucopia of sound that is a force to be reckoned with. Having played on festivals and tours in the past with the likes of The Black Dahlia Murder, The Faceless and Despised Icon, they feel right at home on Summer Slaughter. I got to speak a bit with vocalist Jason Evans and find out more about this very brutal band.

GA: Why don’t we start with you telling me about the band?

Jason: Ingested is a brutal slam metal band from Manchester in the UK, or as well like to call it Slamchester in the UK. Basically, we’re the nastiest motherfuckers that you are ever going to see live. So if you want to come down to a show and slam down, we are going to give you a fucking good time.

(At this point during the interview Jay asked me if he could swear, and I told him it’s fine. I told him that I had an interview earlier that every third word was Fuck. Jay said then we are going to do alright. I even told him I transcribe the interviews so I can take out all the Fucks or leave them in, so at his request we are leaving them in)

Jay-Evans-of-Ingested-By-josh-DresplingGA: So how has Summer Slaughter been treating you and the band?

Jason: So far this has been fucking insane. This is the biggest tour we have ever done. This is like 10 years in the making (for us). We’ve been a band for 10 years, the same 5 guys, never changed, and we have been waiting for this for an entire decade. Now it’s here and we’re going to make the most of it and were going to fucking drop an atom bomb on every single fucking venue.

GA: This is like the who’s who of death metal right here.

Jason: This is just fucking insane tour to be with. I mean with Suffocation, Suffocation is my jam, I love that band so much. By just being on tour with them, and obviously Nile, Cannibal Corpse, it’s like what the fuck is this tour. Like seriously this is like. If you don’t come to this tour, if you are listening to this or reading this, and you haven’t come to this tour when it has come through your state, then what the fuck are you doing, like seriously?

GA: This just a culmination of timeless death metal bands.

Jason: Exactly, this is everything. Like if you are a death metal fan, this is everything you ever wanted.

GA: (laughing) This is the Disneyland of death metal.

Jason:: The Disneyland of death metal exactly, this is death land. Get here, and I’ll be your fucking Minnie Mouse. I’m ready man. Watch our set. Come down early, then come and find me at the merch table. Drag me into the fucking pit, because I’m down, to throw down with all you motherfuckers.

GA: So what’s coming up for Ingested in the future?

Jason: Prior to this tour, we just signed a new record deal with Unique Leader Records. Which we grew up listening to Unique Leader bands, so for us it’s like oh my fucking God. This is our new home. Hopefully our new album will come out early 2017, I have half of the demo versions to work on now, so just waiting to put my filth on it. So first thing 2017, new album, new record label.

Ingested-webGA: Possibly shoot another music video?

Jason: Oh yea definitely!

GA: I’ve seen your video (for Narcissistic Apathy), that video is awesome.

Jason: The one in the restaurant? (Yea)That was so sick. The weird thing about that video, when the people are eating and stuff, we run a full dinner service. Like the band cooked the food. Seriously we were in the kitchen cooking food, so when you see those shots of us chopping shit up, we are actually cooking. We actually did food service. So it’s like a reality death metal video, apart from when we start killing everyone, and eating them.

GA: So the band is culinary keen then?

Jason: Yea, here’s the funny thing about it. We are called Ingested. Which means eat, consume, it’s like we want to consume the fucking planet. Most of the band work in restaurants, like managing restaurants. This all happened after we were a band so it’s like life imitating art, it’s just so weird. So yea we are definitely going to do a new music video, it’s going to be something horrible either way (in themes). We don’t do things nice, we have to do horrible things all the time, we’re nice guys so that’s the juxtaposition of it.

GA: Well that’s about how everything is death metal is. Everything is so hard and so evil, and then when you talk to the members everything is all rainbows and sunshine.

Jason: Exactly, that’s the most beautiful thing about it. Everyone is so friendly. It’s like, yea we get onstage, we look like we are about to shit on the world, but then you come and talk to us at the merch. stand and everyone is like oh my god. Then I’m like yea I’m a cool guy you can talk to me. I’m definitely not cool, I’m just that guy, some death kid who likes to get drunk, play some fucking shows, and hang out with people. That’s the best thing about it, to us as a band. The fans are the most important thing. We can’t do this horrible shit, without you. You guys are like the most important things to us. If you see us at the merch. stand and want to come over and like say hi, come and do that, I’ll hang with you, hell I’ll have a drink with you. That is the best part about this, it’s the most beautiful thing about it, is the fans.

GA: Anything I may have left out, or you want to add?

Jason: If you’ve come to a show, or if you ever bought a fucking t shirt, ever bought a cd, or ever just listened to our band. Even if you didn’t purchase the record but you are listening to it, and enjoying it, come down to a show and say hello to us. That’s all I care about, that’s all we care about. I just want to get this filth out.

Jason has to be one of the coolest motherfuckers I’ve got to meet and talk to. The guys of Ingested are so invested in you, the fans come out and see them live, when they come near you. These guys are so welcoming, and do appreciate all the support they are receiving. Jason I want to thank you for waiting on my ass to get to you on such a busy day, you were such a gracious guy and I wish you and the band well on Tour and have a safe journey home. I can’t wait to hear the music and hopefully we can catch up again in 2017.

Empire Extreme got to sit down and talk to Mercury of Priest when the band came into PA at LoveDrafts.

The show was amazing all the bands that we seen put on a great show for the fans. Vampires Everywhere killed it once again. Last time we seen Priest we only got to see them open for Powerman5000 and got like 6 songs, this time Priest was headlining and we got to see much more which I was excited to see.

Priest played a good mix of old and new and even a few songs off the album “Dark Pulse” which is out in May. We got to see 13 songs played and even Mercury come out into the crowd a few times and when they played “Obey” even blessed some of the crowd. It was great hearing songs like “BlackListed”, “Signal in the Noise”, “History in Black” and “Vaudeville”. It was such a great night of music and a great conversation with Mercury. If you get a chance to see this band play in ur town, it’s a must

Where does the band name come from? Wanting to be the best version of yourself at all times. The name is a reminder to hold ourselves accountable.

How is the music scene in Michigan? The Michigan music scene has always been vibrant and in my opinion, important. Do we get the credit we deserve? Absolutely not. But for the state that brought you Motown, Eminem, Lizzo, The White Stripes, I Prevail and so many other incredible artists – it’s kind of hard to believe that Michigan remains a hidden gem.

How’s the reception from the fans of the latest album “Omen”? It’s been incredible. From seeing people singing along at shows to us seeing new supporters of all different ages, colors, and creeds joining the journey. Omen has been a pivotal album in our career and we’re proud of it!

If you could tour with 2 bands, which bands would you want to tour with? Spiritbox and Bad Omens. They’re both making waves, changing who the metal audience is, and surely they’d be fun to hang around with.

Where do you draw inspiration for the lyrics? Honestly, the lyrics are our stories. The stories of our struggles, our trials and our tribulations.

What’s been your favorite tour or show? We just got off of a tour with our labelmates, Any Given Day. They treated us to a handful of sold out shows over in Europe, which at this point we call our second home. Those were great shows, but any show we’ve done in Europe is typically one for the books!

If you could bring back a dead musician, who would it be? Prince for sure. An incredible musician I would love an opportunity to chat or make music with!

Being Married and being in a band together. Do you feel that makes it easier or harder?

We love to do the Devil’s work together so for us its a match made in hell.

What’s your favorite horror movie?

That’s hard to narrow down but the first few that come to mind are Rosemary’s Baby, The Devil Rides Out, Wickerman, The Devils Reign featuring Anton Lavey, Mario Bava’s Black Sunday, anything starring Vincent Price. We also got to see an advance screen of “Late Night with the Devil” featuring a very evil performance from our friend Dave Dastmalchian. We’re also looking forward to Bryan Fuller’s “Dust Bunny” and are positive it will be a new favorite. The list goes on…..we are huge horror fans.

Favorite Non Horror Movie?

Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca (which is horror/noir adjacent) and The Burbs (also horror adjacent…haha.)

All of Quentin Tarantino’s films- our latest favorite is Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, because 1960’s LA…

What misconception of Satanists would you like to educate people on?

We’re not here to proselytize, force our beliefs on people, or educate people on them Selves, Satanism or anything else. If people are interested in exploring Satanism, we encourage them to do their research and question everything.

If you could bring back any dead musician, who would you pick and why?

We would have loved to do a song with Ronnie Spector who recently passed. Also would have been amazing to collaborate with Jack Nitzsche who arranged so many amazing songs.

If you could tour with any 2 bands, who would you want to tour with?

The Ronnettes & The Shangri-Las.

What has been your Favorite Tour so far?

The God is Dead Tour that we’re currently on is definitely the most evil and blasphemous tour yet. We find it very pleasurable to be able to continue expanding the rituals and seeing our nightmares come true on stage.

You were on “Dragula” with the Boulet Brothers, how was that experience?

It was a fiendish delight to collaborate with some of our fav monsters.

What was it like Touring with Danzig?

Another nightmare come true! We’ve both been fans for a long time and we’re obviously inspired by the wicked world Glenn has conjured. So to get to spend time with him and watch him live every night and to now call him a friend is completely surreal. He’s a legend— but was also one of the coolest, kindest, most unholy people we’ve had the carnal pleasure of touring with.

How’s the reception of the last album “God is Dead”?

Personally, we love the record and are very proud of what we’ve accomplished. As far as other peoples’ reactions…. we don’t know and don’t care! We pleasured ourselves and that’s what matters most.

What got you interested in the style of music you play? And how would describe your music?

We’ve always loved classic American music from jazz to blues to country to rock and roll and so on. We also love the pageantry of heavy metal and theatre. So for us it was a very organic culmination of our obsessions. Rock and roll has always been the devils music.

Have you visited the Satanic Temple in Massachusetts?

No we have not but Lucien did attend one of our rituals so we had a chance to share where we get our babies blood and all things Satan.

Have you had any bad encounters at shows because of the misconception of satanism?

No! We purposefully foster a live show environment where all are welcome, all should come being the most important person in the world which is themselves, whatever that may be. Even Christians! We believe music is meant to bring joy, transcendence… We just want to share the things we love; pink, rhinestones, big hair, great rock ’n’ roll, Satanic ritual, you know…  but we have had churches assemble outside our shows, screaming through distorted PA speakers that God is not dead & wishing us all a “terrible time”.  Why would their God not want us to have fun? This kind of behavior is only makes us more proud to be who we are and do what we love.
